Health at Work - Practical Considerations

Thankfully, the days when children were sent up the chimney to do a day's work are gone - but there's still a risk of injury or illness in the workplace. The repercussions of not having good health and safety procedures in place can have a financial as well as practical cost. Your employer is responsible by law to protect you from hazards and accidents. They should be well-versed in what constitutes hazards and take steps to control them.

    Government News Network (GNN)

About the GNN The Government News Network is the regional arm of Government communications and serves the English Regions, Scotland and Wales. We support Government Departments in Whitehall and elsewhere and Government Offices for the Regions in their co-ordination and policy delivery programmes. Through the News Distribution Service (NDS), we issue government news releases and media information. Headed by Rob Haslam, who is accountable to the Permanent Secretary for Government Communications in the Cabinet Office, the GNN comprises 130 press and publicity officers advising Government and working on the regional delivery of national campaigns so that the media and public in all parts of the country are informed fully about Government activity. There are also 10 staff in NDS handling news distribution. GNN liaises on the Government's behalf with the media, regional stakeholders in government and the public. We accompany Ministers and members of the Royal Household when on their regional tours, add a regional dimension to Government publicity campaigns and gather intelligence on the way the media and the public perceive Government policy. The network also has a briefing and monitoring role in crisis management and emergencies, acting alongside the Cabinet Office's News Co-ordination Centre. The GNN also has a 24-hour emergency call-out service, a media evaluation service (PRESS) and a postgraduate degree programme for communications practitioners in the public sector, run in conjunction with Leeds University. The Network serves: 60+ TV News Programmes 200 local radio stations 120 regional daily and evening papers 1200+ weeklies and…….national, trade and specialist press Life is local: three-quarters of the UK workforce work within 10 miles of home, 40% within two miles. Media is moving from global to local, mass marketing to one-to-one marketing. This trend favours regional media that can deliver target audiences; regional and local newspapers hold the local information franchise. They will continue to deliver information in whichever way their audiences prefer: newspaper, audiotex, fax, Internet, teletext, broadcast, etc. The regional press is the backbone of Britain's media, read by the vast majority of adults every week and considered to be the most trusted, responsible medium of all. There are 1,300 regional and local newspapers in the UK today, including 24 mornings (18 paid-for and 6 free), 75 evenings, 21 Sundays, 535 paid-for weeklies, and 645 free weekly newspapers. Regional newspapers are an integral part of their communities, championing local causes, spearheading campaigns and fighting on behalf of their readers. From the largest regional daily to the smallest rural weekly, regional and local newspapers embody the identity of the villages, towns and cities they serve.
